Medina Azahara:
History says that it took about 25 years to complete this palace. Built by Caliph Abd al-Rahman III, it was an excellent piece of work. It is said that the palace had many most beautiful arches. The columns of the palace were made of marbles on blue and red colors and had precious crystals. There was a liquid mirror; it was just a fountain of flowing mercury. Every column had vegetable motifs.
The palace was surrounded by a garden of fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately the Caliph was defeated and his riches were looted by the mercenaries and the palace remained unknown until it was excavated in 1911. It was later declared a national monument. Thereafter the palace was renovated and the work is still going on. Many of the paintings dating back to the Caliph period are still preserved.
