Alhambra Palace, Spain

Among tourists who visit Europe, their first choice amoung places to see is Spain. The country was under the occupation of many rulers and it has been influenced by many civilizations and cultures such as the Greeks, Romans, Celts, and Moors. Each of these civilizations has contributed in their own way to Spanish design and architecture.

Many of the buildings constructed by rulers of these various civilizations have been well preserved by the government of Spain and have become quite popular amoung tourists. The beauty and massive size of these structures speak about the mastery of the architects of the past who designed these impressive buildings.

Interestingly, in Spain these monumental buildings are found in almost all the cities and towns and even in many of the villages. One such monumental building is the Alhambra Palace located northeast of the city of Granada. Granada has many other buildings of historical importance but it is the  Alhambra Palace which is considered the crown jewel amoung them all.

The Alhambra Palace
, located on Assabica hill, was discovered by some travelers during the 19th century. This stunningly beautiful palace is second to none in beauty and design in all of Europe. It is no surprise that UNESCO has recognized this beautiful structure as a World Heritage Site.

According to historical records
, the palace was built during the 14th century by the Moors. Historical records also say that the palace underwent some renovations and additions during subsequent periods before becoming the uniquely beautiful structure we see today.

The design:
The design of the palace consists of fortified walls with thirteen watch towers and the river Darro in the background. Spread over an area of about 142,000 square meters with vast corridors and spacious rooms, the palace is popular for the beautiful works of sculpture and painting that decorate the interior.

The palace has royal quarters, circuit towers and well designed bathrooms as well as beautiful arches and works of marble, showing that great thought went into the layout and design of this structure.

It was during the Nasrid Dynasty that many additions incorporating renaissance architectural design were made to the palace
. Over time, many master craftsmen and artists have made Alhambra Palace one of the most beautiful structures ever to be found in Europe.
