The Castle of Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara is one of the most famous castles of the region having a privileged location on the top of the spectacular Mount Benacantil. This location makes the castle look like an architectural oasis in the centre of a natural paradise, so the views that wait for you at the top are absolutely spectacular and part of the ‘’must see’’ list in Alicante.
The castle of Santa Barbara is actually a medieval fortress dating back to the 9th century, during the rule of the Moors. The 4th of December 1248 represents the date when the castle was conquered by the Christians and King Alfonso X from the Moors and also the date when a new stage in its life began. The climb to the top of the mountain is worth the effort as the views towards the bay and the city are incredible.
