Benidorm Yesterday And Today
The beautiful Benidorm
Until recently or to be more exact until the 1950s, Benidorm was just a small fishing village that had nothing to do with the tourism industry in Spain. The beautiful holiday resort is situated on the sunny Costa Blanca in the northern part of the country and it is now a very popular destination for tourists.
As it attracts with its warm sun, the crystal clear waters of the sea, the delicate sands and the delicious sangria that will make the blood run through your veins faster than ever.
Benidorm yesterday
Those who visit Benidorm find it very difficult to believe that only 60 years ago the beautiful resort was nothing but a fishing village; the fishing village has a very interesting history that started in 3000 BC.
Discoveries show the fact that Roman and Punic ships were interested in the Benidorm Bay and everything that the bay contained. Other excavations brought to light Roman villas, but the true history of Benidorm starts with the Arabs and their conquest.
The Arabs ruled over Benidorm starting with the 8th century until the 13th century; during these hundreds of years they put the base of the fishing village and formed the settlement that later became the charming Benidorm.
The Christians with Jaime I as their ruler re-conquered Benidorm from the Moors in 1245 and defended it from both the Moors and the Berber Pirates. The Berber Pirates did serious damage to the village with their attacks, damages that were repaired only in the 16th century when the families started returning to Benidorm.
Benidorm today
The 1950s were years of ups and downs for Benidorm as the fish catch started to be poorer and poorer. However, the tourism industry was flourishing at that time, so the town council created a plan to improve the leisure activities and tourism in Benidorm.
The Benidorm that you visit today is a very modern city with hundreds of things to do; you have the opportunity to enjoy the sun on one of the two superb beaches, you can take your children to the theme parks such as Terra Mitica or the Aqualandia, a wonderful water park, you can visit the Marine Park where you have the chance to see penguins, sea lions or dolphins or you can have a lot of fun at one of the many terraces, bars and clubs that are always places full of energy and good mood.
