Bermeo – Basque Country is a Northern Spanish Province

It is an area where human settlements existed from the time before the Romans. Bermeo is a town in it. Bermeo is a very traditional fishing village; it has a huge importance in the fishery of Basque region. Officially, Bermeo appears in the history books under this name since the 13th century. The existence of this habitat still goes back long before these official documents. Even long before Catholicism. This town is probably very old as much as the first evidence of the Basque population.

Bermeo was a fishing village in the 13th century but in the 15th century, it developed and became an important trade center. Bermeo was given the nickname that means “Chief of all Cities in Basque.”

Bermeo had few serious fires in the period of the middle ages, but it recovered and started to grow very rapidly over time. Throughout the middle ages and besides all the troubles that have happened to Bermeo, this city also fought against the growing influence of Bilbao. This constant struggle continued even during the 17th century. Bermeo’s significance was based on real economic power. It had the largest fishing fleet in the whole of Spain (that fleet was owned by the city of Bermeo). Bermeo has never lost its tradition; it is still a very important fishing city in modern Spain.
