Caceres
Its location In Spain
Caceres is located in Extremadura. It is the city of storks, where the large nests are part of the old city. In spring and summer, the white storks nest on the tower, chimneys and TV antennas. You can meet these beautiful birds everywhere in Castilla de la Mancha and Extremadura.
Caceres shows its noble past in a district surrounded by huge walls, where the facade chevrons, the seaworthy towers, the arcades and the crooked cobbled streets create an inimitable atmosphere. The only shortcoming is that nowadays the historical centre is almost empty. As you can see, there are many places to visit while in Caceres.
The Downtown And Its Beauties
To really enjoy your stay in this region of Spain, you must explore the downtown with its attractive environment , which revolves around a large „Plaza Mayor”, dominated by the Town Hall, where the stairs lead you to the original Moorish walls.
At the „Arco de la Estrela”, a huge arch built by Manuel Lara de Churriguiera in the XVIIIth Century , you can enter „Torre de Bujaco” to see the exhibition about the town’s history, and, once you are informed, you can climb the battlements to admire the wonderful city.
Then enter the heart of the venerable old district, „Plaza de Santa Maria” .Enter the „Santa Maria Cathedral” to admire the Gothic arches and the Renaissance details. Just behind stands the „Palacio de Carvajal”, the local tourist office. Enter the beautiful yard and visit the garden behind : take my advice, do not forget to admire the Moorish tower with its fragments of frescoes from the XVIth century.
Next to this cathedral are three Renaissance mansions: Palacio de Hernando de Ovando, Palacio de Moyoralgo and Palacio Episcopal. Another construction type can be seen while admiring the Jesuit church „San Francisco Javier”.
Painted all in white, it was built in the XVIIIth century and has some nice photography exhibitions. „Plaza de Valeta”, „Museo de Caceres”, and San Mateo” Churches are other places full of history; this may be a good way of spending time while you are on holiday.
How To End Your Visit
To conclude, before you leave the „Plaza Mayor ” in Caceres, take a look at the „Torre de los Plata”, the ivy dressed tower behind the „San Mateo” Church and then go down Calle Ancha until you get to the „parador”. It’s an ideal place to have dinner or to stop and drink something, in an environment relating to what you have just visited.
