Castle of Sant Joan: a must see in Lloret de Mar

At the beginning of the history of Lloret de Mar stands the Castle of Sant Joan.

This site, in addition to its cultural interest, offers one of the best views from the town over the Mediterranean Sea.

A castle inherited from the Middle Ages

The Castle of Sant Joan (castell in Catalan) overlooks the beaches of Lloret de Mar and Fenals. All that remains today are a few vestiges of the original fortress that was built in the 11th century.

At that time, the castle of Lloret de Mar consisted of walls, a chapel and a tower that can still be seen today.

Destructions and restorations

A visit to the castle is a good way to discover the history of Lloret de Mar. Built to protect the town from pirate invasions, it suffered greatly over the course of various wars. A 19th century bombardment was its death knell and it finally fell into ruin.

From the 1960s and up until 1992, restoration work was undertaken, particularly on the Tower of Homage (Homenaje in Spanish), which you can admire when you discover the castle.

History enthusiasts will not be alone in their appreciation of this cultural outing: from the summit of the tower, there is an exceptional view over the sea and the Mediterranean coastline. The high point of the visit!
