A little Lloret history…
– From ancient times, the site of Lloret de Mar was occupied by Iberian tribes. The archaeological sites of Montbarbat, Puig de Castellet and Turo Rodo still bear traces of this ancient occupation.
– In Mediaeval times, the town expanded towards the coast. Built in the 11th century, the Castle of Sant Joan bears witness to this expansion and the town’s strategic position on the Mediterranean sea.
– In the 17th and 18th centuries, despite numerous wars, the town prospered due to trade with the colonies. The “Indianos”, the inhabitants of Lloret de Mar who left to find fortune in the Americas, contributed to the town’s renewal upon their return. The Santa Cristina Hermitage as well as the modernist cemetery are the remnants of this golden age.
– At the beginning of the 20th century, the town embarked on its journey as a seaside resort on the Costa Brava, but the Spanish Civil War brought these ambitions to an early conclusion. It was only in the 1950s and 60s, at the same time that European tourism was taking off, that Lloret de Mar became a significant holiday destination in Europe.
