Santa Cristina de Aro, a village with interesting attractions
In Santa Cristina de Aro there are several interesting places to discover.
- The mediaeval parish church of Santa Cristina de Aro is composed of two naves and a transept, and it really is worth a visit. The base of the bell tower is in the Romanesque style and overlooks an ornamental tower which was constructed afterwards. The entrance door dates from the 18th century, whereas the side door was constructed in the 12th century. 300 metres west of the parish you will find the ruins of the pre-Christian church of Serrasol. From the ruins it can be deduced that this church dates from the transition period from Roman Christian cathedrals and the first pre-Romanesque churches.
- In Santa Cristina de Aro we can also find the old railway station that, after functioning for 77 years, finally closed its doors in 1969. The train used to link Sant Feliu de Guixols and Gerona, a vital connection for transporting cork from the coast to the capital of the province. The cork industry provided the most important source of income for the region. The train took two hours for a journey of 37 km and stopped at Santa Cristina de Aro and Font Picant amongst other villages. Today the track serves as a green cycling route between Sant Feliu de Guixols and Olot.
- In Font Picant there is an iron-rich spring which is still visited today for its medicinal benefits.
- Every year at the end of July, Santa Cristina de Aro organizes an exuberant festival, the Fiesta Mayor. There are many other festivals and concerts held throughout the year in Santa Cristina de Aro and the surrounding areas.
