A Medieval treasure in Tossa de Mar
The Chapel of Mare de Deu dels Socors was built in the sixteenth century by a sailing merchant, Antoni Caixa. By doing so, he wanted to give thanks to the One who had saved him from a shipwreck. This is called an “ex-voto”.
It is located in the old field of the cross, where a cross indicating the limit of the town was situated. These crosses actually served as boundaries to mark out territories. Decorated and carved, they often bore an image of Christ on the cross at the centre.
