This is joined by an interesting collection of modern and contemporary art which comprises a painting by the famous artist Chagall.

Tossa through the ages…

Tossa’s Municipal Museum was opened in 1935 and recalls the history of the town both by its collections and the building that houses them. Built within an old restored medieval house, it overlooks a small cove.

The building, built in the fourteenth century, belonged to an important family, the Falgueras and is named after them. Note that the Tribute Tower, one of the three towers that line the town walls, forms part of the museum.

Admire the paintings displayed in this magical and timeless setting, a seamless mix of different historical eras.

Discover the excellent history and art collections

The museum’s collection is divided along two separate lines.

One area of focus is the town’s first occupants. On display here are mosaics that come from this ancient Roman city plus a variety of prehistoric objects, ceramics and coins. Much of the collection comes from excavations carried out at the beginning of the twentieth century on the site of the Roman Els Ametllers villa. Holidaymakers on the Costa Brava thus have the opportunity to build a picture of the town of Tossa de Mar in the context of the history of the Mediterranean and imagine life in Antiquity.

The second centre focuses on a fine collection of contemporary paintings which includes The Celestial Violinist by Chagall. Chagall was a regular in Tossa de Mar which he often visited on holiday. The work that he named “Blue Paradise” has become one of the highlights of the museum collection. In addition to this painting, you will discover a collection of regional modern art, works by Georges-André Klein, Georges Kars and even Olga Sacharoff.

In summer, there are regular temporary exhibitions. To learn more about the exhibition schedule of Tossa’s Municipal Museum’s, visit their website.
