Customs & Culture Of Spain
Spain culture, traditions and customs are a result of the country’s rich and unique history. The regional differences of Spain also correspond to variety in music, sports, food etc. A large number of customs and traditions have taken a legendary form around the world. But most of the tourists who visit Spain have only mild idea about watching flamenco, spotting exotic paella or about eating traditional tapas.
The fact that Spain has remained under control of a number of influences including Moorish, Christians, Muslims etc. gives rise to the fact that Spain is a country that truly aspires to remain united even while carrying diverse flavors and customs.
Geography
Spain’s southernmost region, Andalucía had been under the influence of Muslim autocracy because of which a different kind of culture permeated in its employment. One can truly experience the beauty of various architectural sites as they watch the Granada’s Alhambra Palace. The palace is an explicit work of Mogul architecture. Reina Sofia and El Dorado are major attractions in Madrid that display some distinct work of art by Velazquez, Dali and Goya.
Paella is the most famous dish that contains yellow colored rice in the base with a mixture of shrimps and other seafood over the rice. Saffron is considered the main ingredient in most of the Spanish items. Jamon iberico and jamon serrano are different styles of Spanish ham that is enjoyed by a large number of Spaniards. Egg omelettes, tortilla Espanola, Gazpacho are some of the exotic dishes. Tapas are other favorites among Spanish people and as a visitor to Spain, this something that you must experience.
Sport
Soccer cannot be just called a sport. Spanish people are very passionate about this and pain as top club teams such as FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. The national team of Spain is included in the world’s elite. Bullfighting has long been a controversial tradition Spain and event takes place in plaza de toros throughout the country.
Flamenco is the traditional music and dance of Spain and it has originated in Andalusia. The three aspects of Flamenco: el baile, el cante and la guitarra play an important role in the dance. A typical performance includes intense dancing, colorful dresses and rhythmic stomping. The guitar that is used for playing music throughout the world is also an invention of Spain.
Siesta is the term for daily rest period. Spanish people go for rest between 2 PM to 5 PM. During this time they go home, eat, sleep and spend time with family. Most of the public buildings and shops close during this time and allow people to enjoy.
