Pamplona and its attractions

Probably the most famous place in Spain, outside of its cosmopolitan cities, is Pamplona. Renowned for the festival of San Fermin, which takes place there, this popular bull running festival attracts tourists from all over the world. Every single year the city is over crowded so demonstrating how interesting the festival is. Pamplona is the capital of the autonomous region of Navarre and holds an important position within the Basque country.

The most important event in the calendar of the city is the festival, which takes place in July. The main event of the festival is the Bull Run, when the most courageous participants have to run for 825 meters in front of twelve nervous bulls. The tradition is inspired by the manner in which Saint Fermin was killed – bulls dragged him along the streets. Thousands of people take part into the festival: some sing, others dance, and a few run in front of the agitated animals. It is a moment full of adrenaline, but also inspired by color and joy.

The festival also has its dangers; since 1924, no less than 15 people lost their lives and a few hundred suffered accidents. However, the sad moments have never overshadowed the happy celebration and people continue to visit Pamplona during the festival.
