Granada, A Different Experience

If you want to see the real influence that the Muslims had upon some regions of Spain, then go to Granada. The Alhambra Palace and its gardens represent the apogee of the Muslim architecture.

The center of Granada is one place worth visiting. Gran Via de Colon is the artery that crosses the center of Granada from one part to the other. The artery is packed with beautiful monuments, exquisite examples of different architectural styles: Baroque, Gothic, Renaissance and even Mudejar.

The heart of the city is represented by the Plaza de Isabel la Catolica, a square that hosts in the center of it, an imposing Cathedral. The square is surrounded by other monuments: museums, other cathedrals, and many sculptures. The impressive Cathedral dominates the south-western corner of Granada. Its most important part is the Capilla Real.

The Catholic kings of Spain wanted Capilla Real to be the place that hosts their graves. It resulted a beautiful buiding in an Isabelian Gothic style, generous enough for its royal guests.

The beautiful graves of Fernando and Isabela belong to the architect Domenico Fancelli. The cathedral has been built on the exact place where the Great Mosque used to be. From the Cathedral, go to the Monasterio de San Jeronimo.

The Monastery is a Renaissance jewel, that stands out with a beautiful gallery, the work of Diego de Siloe, the Cathedral’s architect. Your next stop should be the La Cartuja Monastery, the biggest Baroque monument in Granada.

The monastery has generous ornaments: gold, marble, venitian mirrors, mural paintings, they all decorate the monastery.

If you want to turn your attention to the Spanish literature and poetry, visit the former vacation house of Federico Gracia Lorca. The house has been transformed into a museum where you can see some of his works, the original pieces of furniture, paintings made by some of hise friends, like Salvador Dali, and lost of photographs.

Alhambra

You need a lot of time and energy in order to visit Granada’s biggest attractions: the Alhambra Palace. The splendor is visible from any part of the city; its walls and its towers dominate the entire view of the city.
