Getting pick-pocketed or mugged can be an annoying and disheartening experience while you are on a holiday in Spain. Following certain safety rules will keep the chances of you being an easy target at bay.
While in Spain, you must not look like a tourist. You don’t have to buy a new set of wardrobe to dress appropriately but wearing some casual clothes and not dressing up too much will help. This way you will not look out of the crowd and will stay out of the sites of the antisocial elements who wish to do harm to you.
It is better that you try to keep any maps that you have out of sight. If there are a set of complicated directions that you need to follow, sit down at a bar for about 10 to 15 minutes and then note down the directions over a small paper piece. You must look confident. Ambiguity on your face may increase your chances of being noticed.
You must also practice keeping your voice down. Sometimes tourist get noticed from miles away because the reason that they talk louder than other people. Another fact that tourist speak in English while the locals speak in Spanish may also attract attention of pickpockets and thieves.
Classic tricksters are commonly found on Spanish streets and people often fall for these tricks. These tricksters may encounter you in many ways. These include: asking for directions, asking for change and hustling tricks like cup-and-ball game. Conmen generally work in groups or pairs, so you need to be extra careful while you get approached in streets.
You should be very careful about keeping your valuables securely. Internal pockets are a much better option than external ones. If it is necessary to keep things in your external pockets, then it is good idea to cover them with hands so that you can have a constant feel of your valuables. Women can also keep their handbag under the arm. Thieves in Spain are known to use scissors so that they can cut the shoulder straps to make the bag fall. The best advice is using your common sense and remaining conscious of your surroundings. Do not let the worries about safety ruin your holiday. Almost all trips are trouble free and full of excitement. Enjoy yourselves!
