Malaga And Its Monuments

The beautiful Alcazaba

The Alcazaba is one of the most important monuments in Malaga, one that attracts tourists from all the corners of the Globe with its beauty and its history. The construction of the Alcazaba started in 1040 and like so many other monuments of its type, it occupies a beautiful hill.

The monument is actually a fortress that still shows the greatness of the Muslims, a civilization that ruled over big parts of Spain for many centuries. The Alcazaba has imposing walls that surround it and its towers are rectangular; if you climb up the access ramp, your eyes will be nourished with a beautiful view over the brick walls.

The gates are fortified and they are all decorated with spectacular columns and even capitals belonging to the Romans. While there, you have to climb its walls as the views over the city are absolutely breathtaking.

The Gibralfaro Castle

The castle, dating back to the 14th century, was built on the remains of a Phoenician site by the order of Yusef I. The castle became famous due to an event that marks an important point in the history of the country.

It is the place from where the inhabitants of the city fought for no less than three months against the Christian King and Queen, Ferdinand and Isabella. Hunger forced the citizens of Malaga to capitulate, so this is how the Christians conquered the city, putting an end to the Moorish rule.

The spectacular Malaga Cathedral

The construction of the Cathedral in Malaga started in the 16th century but it was finished only in the 18th century; this is probably the reason why the Cathedral displays several architectural styles as its lower part is purely Gothic while the façade is an exquisite example of Baroque architecture. When you enter the Cathedral, the first thing that you will notice is that it is impressive in size.

Those who pay attention to the exterior of the Cathedral will notice the unfinished tower; the tower is superb with its three doors, each of a different color and its paintings. The domes on pendentives decorate the beautiful bays while the spectacular stalls occupied by the chorus were designed by the famous Pedro de Mena. You have to visit the Cathedral and when you do it, pay a lot of attention to all the details because they are absolutely amazing!
