Museums Of San Sebastian

Spain is one of the three most visited countries in the world. It creates an unforgettable journey, a journey to the past, present and future because of its diversity. Spain is famous for its rich historical heritage with its good food and the hospitality of its people. Spain is also well known for its museums. The city of San Sebastian has seven museums where you can enjoy art, science and nature.

These museums are world famous and are a delight to children and students as well as adults. They are of different genres and cater to everyone’s interests and tastes. The following provides some information about each of them.

Aquarium

The sea is the axis of two complementary centers near the port of San Sebastián. In one center, the Aquarium, you will find the popular Kontxita Txuri sharks, countless marine species, the Oceanarium, and an acrylic tunnel that passes through its many aquariums. It is home to many exotic sea animals. The skeleton of a whale caught off the coast is also presented as part of the aquarium experience.

Naval Museum

Located in the old fish market at the consulate, in a building constructed in the middle of the eighteenth century, the Naval Museum works for the conservation, study and dissemination of history and the Basque maritime heritage through long-term temporary exhibitions focusing on different themes.

KutxaEspacio

The natural elements, energy, the stellar universe, technological development and scientific experiments are presented in the kutxaEspacio of Science, located at the top of Miramón, which brings out the natural curiosity of its visitors. This curiosity can be satisfied as long as patrons abide by the slogan “Do Not Touch”.

Cement Museum Rezola

A unique museum is the Museum Center Rezola Cement, which provides time to reflect on all the development and construction accomplished using this material.

Museo Chillida-Leku

Art lovers have two museums that they should not miss: Chillida-Leku and San Telmo. The Chillida-Leku museum is the legacy of Eduardo Chillida. In the town of Hernani, the old Zabalaga farmhouse and farm green groups have over forty sculptures by Chillida. These sculptures project the great outdoors and other aspects of his work.

San Telmo Museum

The San Telmo Museum, well into a stage of major remodeling, remains closed. It seeks to reinvent and deliver a modern museum facility on Basque society.  It is located in a former Dominican convent and was destroyed by a spectacular fire which broke out in the city in 1813, then rebuilt. It is now undergoing a major architectural renovation.
