Costa Brava, the proud beach of Catalonia province, Spain is literally a paradise for those who love nature. This beach which is almost 60 km in length stretches up to Barcelona. Along the entire coast there are many places for the tourist to see and enjoy. Some of the very important places of interest for tourist are mentioned here:
This Gothic style chapel was built in 1694 for Sant Pere del Bosc which according to history was under the control of Benedictines. Later, part of the chapel was destroyed during war and it was restored in 1789. But the reconstruction was made in Baroque architecture and a hermitage was built and it was named Sant Pere Salou.
This is a very beautiful building which just instigates the visitor to pay a visit. The other chapel of importance is the chapel of Sants Metges which is located in the old village. This chapel was reconstructed recently and has great religious importance amongst the local population.
Hermitages: Here we will visit three important hermitages.
When in Costa Brava, make it a point to visit the hermitage of Nostra de Les Alegries. It is said this hermitage was built in the year 1079. According to historians, this hermitage was built to commemorate the consecration of the renowned Sant Roma.
While one section of historians say it was built to celebrate the victory of an Army General by name Quirze, the other section of historians say it was built during the rule of Charlemagne. This is located just on the outskirts of the town and is about 10 minutes drive. It is built in Romanesque architecture. The bell tower of this hermitage is a wonderful structure to be seen.
The other hermitage is that of Sant Quirze which is believed to have been built prior to 8th century. According to historians, some extensions were made to the hermitage during the 8th century which means that the actual construction was made much earlier to it. This is yet another beautiful example of Gothic architecture. This is located at a distance of about 1 km from the centre of the town.
The next hermitage we visit is that of Santa Cristina which is believed to have been built in 1376. It is a most beautiful building with colored marble. Never miss seeing the stunning painting where Saint Christine’s death is depicted. This is also located very close to the city; just about 10 minutes drive.
