Places worth visiting in Spain – Ciutadella
This small village in Spain with a population of about 24000 inhabitants located about 45 kms from the province Mahon traces its history to the 13th century under the rule of Alfonso III. Although the village is small, it is rich in heritage and has many things to offer the tourists; its most stunningly beautiful environment, row of mountains, peaceful holidaying, historical churches, museums and what not! Mediterranean Sea is just in front of the village and it has the most historic coves.
The village has a congregation of many beaches. Some of the most popular beaches around this tiny village are Arenal de Son Saura, Cala Blanca, Cala Bosch, Cala del Pilar, Algaiarens, Cala Morell and La Vall. There are some of the most popular museums and churches and other places of interest. Des Bastino de sa Font municipal museum, Menorca Cathedral built in 14th century, the remains belonging to Arabic and Medieval period, Plaza de la Cathedral, Archeological museum, the famous palace Torre Saura belonging to neoclassial time are some of the many places to visit in and around this small village!
On the 23rd and 24th of June every year a festival called San Juan Fiestas is held. Historians say that this festival is being held since about 600 years. The festival includes a grand procession where the statute of chapel ‘la Ermita Del Santo’ is carried along with a red flag with blue cross of Malta. This festival is held on a large scale and thousands visit the village during this time. The other important festival is Fiestas San Antonio Abad held on January 17th of every year. This festival is held to commemorate his contribution in rebuilding the town and it is believed that he originally belonged to this village.
Shopping:
Ciutadella is very famous for shoes, cheese, spicy sausage and accessories. There are many shops selling traditional art work of Ciutadella. The prices are quite reasonable.
Accommodation:
Plenty of villas and hotels with most modern facilities have come up in this tiny village. Most famous fish foods, seafood soup, noodles, etc. are served in the hotels. There are plenty of bars serving the most famous tapas. There is plenty of scope for water sports and other outdoor sports.
