Seville and its Gothic Cathedral
About Seville: Seville lies in the southern region of Spain and it is the artistic capital of Spain. Situated on the banks of River Guadalquiver 7 meters above sea level, it is said to be originated before 10 A.D. It ranks fourth on the basis of population. Most of the monuments reflect Arabic culture, even though this city has fusion of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque heritage.
It was conquered by Muslims in 712 B.C. and they named the city as Isbiliya, from which the city took its present name. Seville gained business importance from the period of Columbus who started his expedition to the new world from Seville’s port, all the goods have to pass through its port, before being distributed.
The city’s population grew up to one million within a few years because of its economic expansion. Seville was worst affected by Plague during 1649, to which many people succumbed. At present, industrialization and increase in population contribute to its growth and expansion. Seville is the spiritual home of both Flamenco and bull fighting. Samanta Santa Easter celebrations magnetize tourists from all over the world. July and August are the months to be avoided at Seville because of the scorching heat.
Gothic Cathedral of Seville: Seville is one of the seductive cities of Spain. Any visitor who sees the Cathedral would immediately be drawn towards its magnificence. In view of its dimensions, it is considered to be the third largest temple in the world. The origin of this Cathedral dates back to the 12th century.
The Moors heritage of architecture includes Gothic Cathedral, Giralta and its bell tower. Inside the Cathedral, you will see the Golden tower by the banks of the Guadalquiver River. Next to this you can visit Reales Acazares which means Royal Fortress which encloses courtyards, decorated halls and numerous rooms which all reveal the architecture of Moorish heritage.
Archives of the Indies remind us about the conquest of America, standing there as a valid credential center. Next important monument is Casa de Pilatos which blends the Gothic heritage with Renaissance culture.
