Spain – Walker’s Paradise

 

Spain has rightly been described as Walker’s Paradise and most of the people who have had the chance of exploring the country will agree with this. Spain is known to have an enormous and diverse countryside that is perfect for spending some walking holidays.

From Green Spain towards the North to Sierra Mountains towards the southern Spain – Stunning, rugged and beautiful landscapes has a great scope for wildlife and bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. The walks keep changing their moods from adventurous and thrilling to quiet and serene.

The gentle trails that take one to lush green vales and tortuous mountain paths to scorched earth olive groves are just fascinating enough to spellbind anyone. The views keep going on endlessly. A large variety of flora and fauna, indigenous to Spain can also be seen. When this panorama is combined with 300 days sunshine, the place automatically becomes a great preference for walking holidays.

Though a number self-guided walking holiday tours are available with various touring companies, you can walk practically go wherever you feel like. Area around Ronda in Andalucía is considered one of the favorites of walkers and is basically known for its white villages that are present in Sierra of Grazalema. You can start your journey from the scenic town of Zahara and take a nice stroll in nearby villages. You will require walking for approximately 14 km each day, for 5 – 6 hours.

Drovers’ Roads in Andalucía is also famous for Spanish walk. These places have been featured in the book – ‘Unforgettable walks to take before you die’ by Steve Watkins. The book has beautifully illustrated some of the extraordinary photographs that were taken by them during their world trip.

The northern part of Spain near the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees’ is another suitable destination for walking holidays. The Catalonian region provides ample opportunity to explore the Besalú’s medieval town, volcanoes (extinct) and rolling plateaus. Quatretondeta, a Spanish region that is located towards the North West Alicante has also remained undiscovered by hikers and walkers due to predominating coastal tourism but this mountainous region is also worth travelling around.

The best time to arrive Spain for Southern Spain walking holidays include the months of May, April, Sept and October. January – May and September- December are the months recommended for walking holidays in Northern Spain. Mostly all locations in Spain are blessed with stunning sceneries and perfect sunny weather to make your holidays unforgettable.
