Tarazona, Spain
The town of Tarazona is also known as Mudejar City. Tarazona is quite unique actually, an amazing place to visit if you are a tourist. The town was set at the bottom of Moncayo Mountain, even though little terrain was available on which to actually raise a city.
It features memorable street designs, built on top of the Queiles River quays, medieval building and street design and a rich history. In the past, the Argon kings once lived there. Overall, Tarazona is an amazing and cultural place, a very fitting place to visit if you want to relax and are passionate about history.
Amongst many tourist attractions, you can visit the Gothic Cathedral of the city. The building’s construction began in the 1200s and was completed much later, in the 1600s. This is the main attraction in Tarazona. Even though by the time the cathedral was actually completed, Spain was in the Catholic period, we can also observe some interesting Mujedar style design on the Gothic Cathedral. This style can be observed the best in the lantern tower. The dome is very much the same as the one of the Zaragoza Cathedral.
You can also go to the Town Hall, called the Ayuntamiento, featuring the relief of Isabella and Ferdinand, following the conquering of Granada. This impressive monument is located on a hill in the Plaza de Espana, which features an amazing view of the city. This is one of the best views in town. If you follow the tourist route even further, you will find a place called the Santa Magdalena church. This church features a Mujedar tower as well. Further up the route, you will find another church called La Concepcion, which also features a Mujdar tower as well.
In the past, before the Jews were expelled in 1492, the town of Tarazona had a flourishing Jewish population living in the old town. We cannot find many remains from that period of time today, though. The town’s alleys feature the same Spanish and Moorish design that we were talking about and some amazing structures.
Some houses are constructed on natural rock formations and above the caves in which the town’s Jewish population were kept. We can also observe a mysterious medieval building in the middle of the old town. The experts do not really know what it is, but the majority believes that is was once a Talmud Torah. A group of Jewish researchers are working to restore the building.
