The 12 most beautiful beaches in Spain
When you picture a holiday in Spain, long stretches of beach and idyllic coves spring to mind. With around 3000 miles of coastline on the mainland alone and thousands more miles of beaches and coves on the Balearic and Canary Islands, Spain is a popular destination for a beach holiday, for good reason. But which beach is the most beautiful? That’s hard to say, because every spot has its charm. We’ve listed the 12 most beautiful beaches in Spain that, in our opinion, really stand out.
Platja Gran, Tossa de Mar (Costa Brava)
The main beach of Tossa de Mar (Platja Gran) is located on the promenade, just a few steps away from the old, medieval centre. It has long been a popular beach with young and old alike. What makes this place so special isn’t just the fine sandy beach, but the centuries-old city walls and battlements that run down to the seafront, making you feel as though you’ve been transported back to the Middle Ages on your beach towel.

Cala Xaracca (Ibiza)
One of the most beautiful beaches of Ibiza is somewhat hidden away in the north of the island. The water is crystal clear, making it a popular spot for snorkelling and diving. It’s also possible to take a SUP-board out on the water and paddle along the coastline. If you’re looking for action, try jumping off a rock into the heavenly water.
Playa de los Muertos (Costa del Sol)
The name Playa de los Muertos (Beach of the Dead), may not sound very appealing, but the Spaniards themselves have been calling Playa de los Muertos one of the most beautiful beaches in the country for years. And with good reason! This pearly white gravel beach is located in a protected nature reserve on the Costa del Sol and the waters of the Mediterranean are crystal clear here. It does take some effort to get there as it is situated at the bottom of a cliff, but the walk is well worth it.
Cala Montijo (Costa Brava)
Surrounded by the impressive landscape of the Cap de Creus Nature Park, lays Cala Montijo. This white sandy beach is not only a paradise for sunbathing, but is also perfect for snorkelling or taking a walk in the lush surroundings. The mountains in the nature park are the foothills of the Pyrenees, whose rock formations extend into the water.

Maspalomas (Gran Canaria)
Maspalomas beach in Gran Canaria is almost 4 miles long and 100 metres wide in some places. It’s a popular spot for families with children, but even those looking for peace and quiet will find a nice spot on this beach. The beach is bordered by metres-high sand dunes, which is why this area is also called the Spanish Sahara.
Playa de los Silencio (Asturië)
Although the sun-kissed Mediterranean coasts have beautiful beaches and coves, the Atlantic north-west coast also has a number of gems. Perhaps the most beautiful and unique is Playa de los Silencio in the Asturias region. The beach is located in a semi-circular inlet formed by rocks and lots of greenery. A paradise you might not expect to find in this part of Spain.
Playa de Moraig (Costa Blanca)
Cala de Moraig, located on the Costa Blanca, north of the attractive seaside resort of Moraira, is a bay surrounded by rocks up to 100 metres high. Here, you can combine the Spanish sun with water sports such as snorkelling, diving and sailing. If you want to stretch your legs, take a walk along the paths to discover caves and idyllic coves.
Cala Llombards (Mallorca)
The dreamy bay of Cala Llombards is located in the south of Mallorca, not far from the popular resort of Cala d’Or. The shape of the beach is remarkable: only 55 metres long, but over 100 metres wide. The azure waters of the bay and the white sandy beach are surrounded by rocks with pine trees. There are various facilities, making this a perfect place for a wonderful day on the Spanish coast.
Platja Treumal (Costa Brava)
One of the most exotic beaches on the Costa Brava is Platja Treumal, located in the beautiful resort of Blanes, just south of Lloret de Mar. The beach is surrounded by green pine trees and the azure water contrasts beautifully with the golden sand. Its location by the Pinya Rosa botanical garden makes you feel like you are in paradise: a wonderful place for young and old. Platja Treumal is rightly included in the list of the most beautiful beaches of Spain.
Cala Macareletta (Menorca)
The picturesque Macarelleta beach on the island of Menorca may not be one of the biggest beaches in Spain, but it is definitely one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. The white sandy beach is surrounded by rocks with trees. You have to walk a short distance to get there, but the reward is a beautiful setting. The sheltered position of the bay makes it an ideal place for families with children who can play to their heart’s content in the calm water.
Tío Ximo (Costa Blanca)
Tío Ximo is a small beach near the popular resort of Benidorm. You can escape the hustle and bustle of the big city beach here and enjoy the intimacy of this small cove. The sandy beach is surrounded by rocks and the steep cliffs of the Sierra Helada Nature Park. This makes the bay an excellent place to snorkel in the calm water and admire the underwater world of the Mediterranean.
Playa Bolonia (Costa de la Luz)
In the southernmost part of Spain lie the long, unspoilt sandy beaches of the Costa de la Luz. Playa Bolonia, with a length of almost two and a half miles, is one of these beaches and cannot be left off the list of the most beautiful beaches in Spain. This stretch of Spain borders the Atlantic coast, making it a popular spot for kite surfers. In the summer months, however, it is a wonderful place to enjoy the sun, sea, sand and unspoilt nature. On a clear day, you may even be able to see the African continent on the other side of the sea.
