The Beauties Of Elche
Wonders of a Spanish town
Elche is the Spanish town also known as the Palm’s city, due to the unique palm tree forest that surrounds it, the only forest of its kind in the world. Twenty three kilometers away from the capital of the province, Alicante, and just fifteen kilometers away from the Alicante airport, Elche is one of the most accessible holiday destinations along the Costa Blanca.
The A-7 highway, the N-340 road and the Alicante-Murcia train are just a few of the ways to get to Elche, so don’t worry about the transportation because you will easily get there and back.
A few things about Elche
Elche is one of those Spanish towns that will impress you with its history. The area around the town was inhabited long ago, almost 5000 years BC, when the Neolithic age was at its peak.
The Bronze Age was a flourishing time for the city and in the 5th century BC, the beautiful town of Ilici town was built, now a part of Elche. It is within that period that the beautiful and now very famous bust known as the Lady of Elche was built, one of the most important, if not the most important, work of art of the Iberians in this ancient era.
The 3rd century BC brought the Carthaginians to Elche and the 1st century BC brought the rule of the Romans. Thanks to the Romans, Elche grew into a very important commercial center, until the Visigoths came. The Christians and the Muslims also ruled over the town later and this is the reason why Elche has such an impressive mixture of influences.
Elche today
When you visit Elche, you will soon realize that it is an industrial town, with lots of manufacturers who attract a lot of money. Thanks to its financial state, the town also grew into an important cultural and tourist center, so don’t worry about getting bored in Elche.
A big attraction of the city is the forest of palm trees, but the cuisine of the town also deserves your attention, especially if you are a gourmet. Try the rice paella, because it will surely delight your senses.
Sightseeing is an important activity in Elche, which is also a town that is home to two World Heritage Sites as declared by the UNESCO: the palm tree forest and the Medieval Drama performed in the town which dates back to the 15th century. Have fun!
