The Great Toledo
Spain is very proud to have a city like Toledo, which is one of its greatest and most beautiful. The setting of Toledo is amazing: a breathtaking surrounding dominated by the rocky mountain that hosts on its top the city and its walls. The rocky mountain has three sides isolated by a beautiful looping gorge belonging to the Rio Tajo, while the rest of the landscape seems to be of an abrasive desolation.
However, it is an abrasive desolation that charms you and wins your heart from the first moment you see it. Every possible inch of the town that was part of the hilltop has been built upon: this is how Toledo has become a sightseeing centre, with hundreds of monuments to visit. Those who only want to spend a day in Toledo will not have enough time to see everything that deserves being seen, so take into consideration spending at least a night in this spectacular Spanish city.
The fascinating attractions
When evening comes and the city is lit up, the view that opens in front of your eyes looks exactly like one of El Greco’s paintings lit by the full moon. The big crowds are gone at this time of the day, so you will have the chance to see Toledo in a completely new light, as a completely new place. At the beginning, you will find extremely confusing the street layout, but don’t panic: the old core is very small, so you will soon and easily find the way out.
What attracts tourists is that Toledo is the typical city where you can wander around, letting yourself absorbed by the parts that you discover step by step. Those who love the work of the famous El Greco will adore Toledo; for them, I strongly recommend visiting the Cathedral, the spectacular synagogues and the outstanding Alcazar. When you find an open doorway, enter it, as it is very probable to find a spectacular patio or a stunning Mudejar ceiling.
Useful information
Reaching Toledo is not difficult, especially if you travel by train from big cities like Madrid or Barcelona. The train station itself is a fantastic work of art, a mock-Mudejar creation built in 1919. If you prefer travelling by bus, then you should know that the bus station is very modern. Those who need information regarding the restaurants, accommodation or entertainment possibilities should visit the tourism office that permanently stays at their disposal. Have fun!
