The Intreting Ciutadella

Those who want a special Spanish holiday should choose as destination the beautiful Ciutadella. Ciutadella is a town that sits above a spectacular harbor, which made it extremely interesting for the Romans, who chose it as location for one of their towns; a few centuries later, the Moors also became interested in it and last, but not least, was the turn of the Catalans to conquer Ciutadella.

However, the 18th century, with all its colonial powers, brought a shadow on Ciutadella, as it seems like neither the British nor the French found it important; this is one of the reasons why the architecture you’ll find in Ciutadella is very different from the one you find in other Spanish towns, as it is not too much influenced by the French or by the British. This architectural originality and uniqueness is the one that makes Ciutadella so appealing to tourists; if you add to this the exquisite restaurants, the excellent hotels and the picturesque views, you’ll see that Ciutadella is a very pleasant place for a holiday.

Visiting the town

Everything worth visiting in Ciutadella is located around the impressive, fortified cliff: the main plazas, the iimportant mportant buildings and monuments. Placa d’es Born is one of the most spots in Ciutadella, as this is the place where you will find the famous obelisk, the monument that commemorates the tough and futile defense against the dangerous Turks in 1558. The ‘’ajuntamient’’ is also something that you have to visit: in order to do that go to the western part of the square.

Its arches and its crenellations were built in the 19th century, but they try to copy the typical Moorish style. They are beautiful; I am sure that you will love it! Also dating back to the 19th century is the outstanding Torresaura Palace, an aristocratic mansion that looks much older than it really is. You should also make some time to visit the other squares and all the museums, because they are the ones that tell you the story of the city.

Eating in Ciutadella

Since Ciutadella is a Spanish town, the food is very important in its life; tourists will adore the local, traditional cuisine. You have to try it; it is delicious.
