The most beautiful places in the Costa Brava – discover them all!
The Costa Brava, with 200 kilometres of beautiful sandy beaches, idyllic bays and cliffs, is one of the most beautiful destinations in Spain. Picturesque fishing villages and lively seaside resorts alternate. Remnants from times long gone give you a unique glimpse into how people lived here centuries ago. History still dominates the atmosphere in the old villages and town centres. The breathtaking natural beauty is something you cannot ignore, from the mountainous landscapes in the interior to the amazing underwater world. With so much beauty to choose from, deciding what to see can be difficult. Therefore, we have listed the most beautiful places on the Costa Brava for you.
Costa Brava – the “Wild Coast”
The Costa Brava on the Mediterranean is the most northerly coast in Spain. It is part of the Catalonia region and runs 200 kilometres south from the border with France. Just beyond Blanes, the Costa Brava becomes the Costa Dorada.
The Mediterranean climate ensures mild winters and warm summers. Because of the favourable location and the wonderful climate, many tourists are drawn to this region every year. You will find famous resorts here, including Lloret Mar, Blanes, Tossa de Mar and Rosas. However, those looking for lesser-known resorts will not be disappointed either.
The literal translation of Costa Brava is “Wild Coast”. When you see the rugged cliffs and rocks that extend from the mountains in the interior to the Mediterranean Sea, you will understand the reason for the region’s name.
More than 200 kilometres of beaches and coves
With a coastline of 200 kilometres, the Costa Brava offers countless beaches and coves, each one more beautiful than the next. Many of these beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag. This is a quality mark that guarantees, among other things, clean water and hygiene.
Amongst all these beautiful beaches, there are some real gems you should not miss. Cala Aiguablava near Begur is a paradise on earth. The clear blue water is calm and shallow and the colours contrast beautifully with the white sandy beach and green pine trees. Aigua Xeilia near Tamariu is another paradise in a secluded cove.
Near Tossa de Mar, you will find the quiet but easily accessible sandy beach of Cala Senyor Ramón, which is surrounded by rocks and nature. Near Lloret de Mar, you can enjoy a lovely sandy beach surrounded by pine forests and beautiful cliffs at Santa Cristina. In the north of the Costa Brava, near Rosas, you can spend a wonderful day on the beach at Platja de Sant Pere Pescador. At over 6 kilometres long, it is the largest beach on the Costa Brava.
The most beautiful and authentic villages
Countless towns and villages are scattered along the Costa Brava. Many of them have a well-preserved old centre and ooze charm and atmosphere through their narrow, winding streets. The village of Cadaquès, located in the north, is praised as being one of the most beautiful. Not only does it have an air of nostalgia but also an artistic atmosphere due to its connection with the famous artist Salvador Dalí.
The importance of fishing to the inhabitants of the Costa Brava is reflected in the idyllic village of Palamos. It is a charming and peaceful town, with a beautiful historical town centre and one of the largest fishing fleets and ports in the whole region.
Llafranc forms one municipality with the villages Tamariu and Calella de la Palafrugell. Nevertheless, the three villages each have their own characteristics and charms. Llafranc has a more luxurious vibe with a beautiful marina and promenade, while Tamariu and Calella de Palafrugell have wooden fishing boats on the beach.
Inland, you will find the medieval villages of Pals, Palau Sator and Peratallada. Together, they form the so-called Golden Triangle. They are characterised by small, narrow alleys and centuries-old buildings around charming squares and fountains. In Palau Sator, you can visit the old city battlements, while just outside Palls, you will find the castle Castell de Pals. In Peratallade, you will find a medieval castle that is still largely intact, surrounded by a maze of picturesque streets and squares. A visit to these villages is like taking a trip back in time.
The natural beauty of the Costa Brava
Nature lovers will enjoy the Costa Brava, both on land and in and along the water. In the north, you can visit one of the biggest nature parks in Catalonia: Cap de Creus. The locals call this area the “point of the devil”. The nature park covers no less than 14,000 hectares and consists of mountains and rocks that run into the sea. High cliffs, wild bays and small islands are the habitat for hundreds of different species of plants and animals, both on land and in the sea. Besides walking and cycling, you can also snorkel and dive here.
The protected Medes Islands, off the coast of L’Estartit, are another great diving spot. It is one of the most important marine reserves in the Mediterranean and therefore a popular place to explore the underwater paradise. You can feast your eyes on different types of coral, barracudas, spiny lobsters and stingrays.
A real highlight of the Costa Brava is the Gavarres mountain range, whose summit is at 532 metres. The area is crossed by small rivers, ponds and lakes and you can also visit ancient monuments and medieval villages.
