The Stunning Beauty of Spain- Garajonay National Park

The Canary Islands are one of the most sought-after tourist spots in Spain. The Canary Islands are located off the northwestern coast of Africa, bordering Morocco. The beaches in the Canary Islands are known for their beauty, cleanliness and water sports.

In fact it is considered to be the most ideal place for those who want to spend their holiday in the most entertaining environment possible. The uniqueness of the Canary Islands is that apart from the vast beaches there are also many hills or huge rock formations which run parallel to the beaches.

One of the most popular rock formations is Garajonay Hill which is about 4000 feet high. This rock formation is located inland on the island of La Gomera which is one of the smaller of the Canary Islands.

This rock formation is covered by thick subtropical forest. Considering its ecological importance, the government of Spain has declared the Garajonay rock formation and the forest surrounding it as a National Park and has designated this protected area. UNESCO also has declared this area as a World Heritage Site.

The Garajonay National Park has become a popular tourist spot because of its picturesque natural environment. Interestingly, if one views the picture of Garajonay National Park as taken from satellite, he would be surprised to find that the entire park looks like a piece of art made on a palm leaf.

The Garajonay hill also brings in good rainfall which has contributed to the abundant vegetation. The peak is normally covered by fog and the famous laurel trees can be found in abundance here.   According to archeologists, this rock is of volcanic origin.

The beautiful wooden statues of Gara and Jonay, which have a legend associated with them, are one of the most visited places in this park. The park has all the amenities for the tourist to enjoy his stay.

‘Laurisilva’ is the major form of vegetation growing in this park. Apart from the massive rock formations some of the rare species of flora and fauna can also be found here. The forest has many reptiles as well as other wild animal species. It is also the home for many birds.

The stripeless tree frog is a rare species of frog that can be found here. There are large footpaths which help the tourists to go trekking. It is suggested that the tourists should be accompanied by a trained tour guide while trekking.
