The Wonderful City Of Valencia
The two thousand years old city of Valencia has an impressive historical heritage that always attracted visitors from all the corners of the world. Numerous monuments and buildings stand as proof of its imposing past, betraying the presence of all the cultures that at a certain time in the past were interested in Valencia.
The Moorish presence is the most obvious one, especially if you visit the Abd-al-Malik’s Baths; the old walls of the city are another proof of the Moorish presence, as these walls used to surround the Valencia Kingdom in the 12th century. The Gothic architecture represents another forte point of Valencia, as most of the old buildings of the city display this style, a very beautiful and unusual one. In order to understand the beauty of the Gothic architectural style, visit the Metropolitan Cathedral with its famous and splendid Gothic belfry in an octagonal shape.
The Bell tower known under the name of El Micalet, dating back to the 14th century is another wonderful example of Moorish architecture. The 207 steps that take you up to the top of the Bell tower are worth the effort, because the views that will open in front of your eyes from that point are absolutely stunning.
Valencia and its fiestas
As any other Spanish city, Valencia knows how to have a lot of fun, so especially during summers you’ll have the chance to take part into one of its fiestas. March hosts the Fallas for one week, a week during which very interesting papier-mâché sculptures are being burnt while the colored fireworks lit up the sky. Another popular festival is the one that commemorates the re-conquest of Valencia by the Christians; during this festival, you’ll witness mock fights between the Christians and the Moors and parades having as central figures the authentically dressed troops.
