Visiting Barcelona For Its Festivals

The biggest city Spain has after its capital Madrid, Barcelona is also an important city: it is the capital of Catalonia, the autonomous region that you will find in the north east of this wonderful country. Barcelona is a city where the Romans, the Visigoths, the Moors and the Christians left parts of them which now mingle throughout the city, giving it its beauty and uniqueness. This very famous and popular tourist destination attracts millions of visitors every year due to the unusual architecture and the special flavor of every little corner of the city.

Interesting aspects of the city

Barcelona is one of the cities in Spain where art and culture seem to flourish every day; the masterpiece of the city is Gaudi’s creation La Sagrada Familia, one of the reasons why so many people put Barcelona on their must see places in the world. Add to this spectacular building the wonderful Gothic Quarter also known as the Barri Gottic, the spectacular buildings displaying the Art Nouveau style and the impressive list of museums and historical buildings; and you will understand why Barcelona is such a popular tourist destination.

However sightseeing, history, art and culture are not the only reasons why people go to visit Barcelona; many of them are attracted by the fiestas in Barcelona and after taking part in one of them, they are completely charmed. It is no wonder why some of the people who visit Barcelona schedule their vacation according to the fiesta calendar. If you are not aware of what they involve and their dates, here are a few tips that can help you in taking the decision to visit Barcelona.

The fiestas

The Sant Jordi is the one that opens the fiesta list, on the 23rd of April. It is the fiesta honoring the patron of Barcelona; its interesting aspect is the exchange that takes place between men and women: women receive roses, men receive books (it has been tried to suggest the fact that Shakespeare and Cervantes died on this day).

Children’s favorite festival is Sant Joan, which takes place on the 23rd and the 24th of June and is marked by spectacular fireworks shows. If you love listening to live music, the Major de Gracia festival in August is the right one for you. The 24th of September hosts the Merce festival where people drink a lot of quality wine, listen to music, watch human pyramids and enjoy themselves. Have fun!
