Visiting Zaragoza
It is often said that Zaragoza, the capital of Aragon, Spain, is one of the largest cities in Spain. Its charm lies mainly in the fact that it has relatively few tourists who frequent the area. Those who decide to get off the train, however, are rarely disappointed.
The old town is full of typical Spanish restaurants and the Aragonese cuisine is excellent. Zaragoza is the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Aragon. Situated in an enviable geographical position in the city, an ancient Roman foundation, after the liberation from Muslim rule it became the capital of the kingdom of Aragon.
Zaragoza, consisting of the old town and the new one, enjoys a good climate. The best season to visit is the one that goes from April to October. In addition, the city is the main tourist, business and politics hub of the region, which includes the provinces of Huesca and Teruel. The currency is the Euro, which is divided into cents, and as most of the rest of Spain, Zaragoza is not too expensive.
Places of interest
The old town is accessed through the Ebro or through Ponte de Santiago, and is the area with many historical monuments of Zaragoza. You must visit the ancient Roman Wall, the Tower of Zuda, City Hall, the beautiful Basilica del Pilar, the main religious building of the city, along with the Cathedral of San Salvador.
Also in the old town that is worth a visit is Armijo Palace, seat of the Aragonese Courthouse and the Aguilar Palace, which houses a collection of the works of the Aragonese painter, Goya. After these, worth visiting are the Church of Mary Magdalene, the Roman Theatre and the Palace of the Moon.
The new city; this place is busy most of the time and is the commercial center. You can start from the beautiful Plaza de Espana and walk along the Paseo de Independencia until you reach the Plaza de Aragon, the heart of the modern city. Nearby there is the courtyard of the Princess, which hosts other works by Goya.
We then come to one of the most beautiful places in Zaragoza, the Primo de Rivera Park, which is the most beautiful park in this city.
Other destinations in Zaragoza
Not far from the center, there is another symbol of the city, the Palais de la Aljaferia, an old Arab building that now houses the regional parliament.
