World Heritage Cities
Spain has an amazing number that have been designated a World Heritage by the UNESCO. Not just a building, not just a monument or a square, but the entire city has been designated a World Heritage. Caceres, Merida, Salamanca, Ibiza, Toledo, Cordoba, Avila, Segova, and Santiago de Composetela are just a few of them.

Salamanca is situated in the centre of the country, just 212 kilometers away from Madrid. It is a magnificent city, the city where the first University in Spain was founded. This makes Salamanca a center of learning excellence. Salamanca is also known as the city of the Spanish language.

It is here where the first Grammar of the Castillan Language appeared, some time around the 15th century. The last special thing about Salamanca is that the Via de la Plata passes through the city. It is one of the reasons why Salamanca has been designated a World Heritage by the UNESCO.

Toledo and Merida
Of course, all the thirteen cities are worth visiting, but if you don’t have the time to visit them all, at least try not to take out from your list Toledo or Merida. Toledo is the city in Spain with one of the greatest number of monuments. The most special thing about Toledo is that the city is known as the “city of the three cultures”.

Its name comes from the fact that for many centuries three different cultures lived together behind its walls: the Arabs, the Jews and the Christians. Merida, just like Salamanca, is situated on the route of Via de la Plata (the Silver Route). Its uniqueness comes from the fact that the city is the heir of a great Roman legacy.
