Palamós
Palamós has from cork industry till fishery and it's also a calm coastal village on the Costa Brava
Palamós is a quiet seaside resort on the Costa Brava which borders Calella de Palafrugell and Sant Antoni de Calonge. Palamós was founded in 1279 by Peter III from Aragón, who had the objective of building a new harbour. In the beginning of the 20th century, Palamós and its neighbour village, Palafrugell, were the main economic powers of Empurdà's coast. Their most important sources of incoming were the cork industry, the commercial fishery, the wineries and the fruit market. Since the second half of the 20th century, tourism has become more important in this area. Slowly, the original industries have become less important and tourism is taking their place. The climate is very sunny and mild during the whole year and it's still a calmer village than Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, Playa de Aro or Blanes. Besides being a peaceful holiday destination, Palamós is nowadays also a very much appreciated coastal town during the winter.Find here your apartment or villa in Palamós
Palamós, the number one harbour on the Costa Brava
Even if tourism has become more important, Palamós is still a very influential harbour. These days, Palamós has one of the biggest fishing fleets of the Costa Brava. Shrimps and prawns are the main captures in Palamós. The daily arrival of fishing boats to the harbour, in the afternoon, is certainly something you should experience. It's a very busy moment, especially when the sale starts at the fish market. In the harbour, you can also visit the Fishers' Museum, where you'll discover everything about the fishers' life and the history of the fishery.Palamós' beaches are reachable from a beautiful path that goes along the coast
Palamós has also beautiful beaches and rocky bays that are easily reachable by foot or with a vehicle. Do you want to choose a beach? Decide between the beaches of Palamós, Playa de la Fosca or Playa del Castel. The most northern one, Playa de Castel, is also the most virginal thanks to a referendum in the 90's that prohibited constructing in this area. If you are looking for a precious beach with rocks, some of the options are Cala Margarida or Cala S'Alguer. Cala Estreta is a mix of a sandy beach and a rocky one. On the big bay, you can swim, surf or sail. Along the coast of Palamós, there's a path that connects all the beaches and bays with each other. The landscapes of the surroundings, with pine trees till the sea, are breathtaking. The path starts above a small bay called El Golfet and goes through beaches like El Frocats or El Canyers, till the first houses of Calella de Palafrugell.Palamós, the departure point to several nice trips and excursions
- In the historical centre of Palamós, you can wander through very small alleys till the late Gothic church, l'Iglesia de Santa Maria. The touristic centre is quickly recognizable because of the many bars, restaurants, water sports clubs, the theatre, the hotels and the hostels. It offers you so much that it's nearly like a real city.- The city is surrounded by beautiful nature and very interesting views. From Palamós, you can go to all directions: you can have a walk or a bike ride in the nature or go to another coastal village.
- From the beaches of Palamós, there are also many boat excursions to many villages on the Costa Brava. From a boat, you'll have a very different view of the irregular coastline. On the north, you'll find rocky bays like the ones from Calella de Palafrugell, Llafranc or Tamariu, on the south, long beaches of different towns like Playa de Aro or Sant Feliu de Guixols.
- Palamós is also very rich in culture. For example, there's an International Festival of Classical Music and a Catalan Havanera meeting, where you'll enjoy the typical singing of the region.
- In matters of sports and entertainment, in Palamós, you can kart, (deep) dive, sail and surf.
- Don't forget to pay a visit to the Fishers' Museum in Palamós. This museum is the only one of this kind in the whole Mediterranean coast line.
